The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) will no longer be accepting online credit taken from BYU starting August 1 of this year because of suspected cheating perpetrated by BYU athletes and their coaches. The only other college penalized will be Illinois-based school, American School. BYU currently offers over 400 different classes in their online independent study program starting with 7th grade through university levels.

“Students cannot teach themselves, and they cannot pace themselves. The courses need to have a certain amount of rigor,” said NCAA spokesperson Chuck Wynne.

Other universities with strong athletic programs are now worried that the NCAA will place similar bans on their online and independent study programs. According to the Associated Press, the changes will not affect NCAA Division II schools, but a panel representing them will reconsider the measure in June.
