Spanish romance, southern accents and nine improvisation extraordinaires all graced the stage at the Snow Black Box Theatre on June 25. Comic Frenzy is an improv group at BYU-Idaho that performs every semester.
The audience was enthusiastic while the nine performers took turns playing different games. The team used suggestions from the audience.
The team started out the evening with a game they called "Doo Run Run." They asked for a one-syllable name from the audience, and they were provided with the name “Sam.”
Following this, they all stood in a line and sang “Doo run run,” and each player had to rhyme “Sam” with something else; if they could not, they were eliminated from the challenge.
The name "Sam" was followed by "Nick," "Tom," "Julie" and "Ethel." (They threw two- syllable names in there to make it more challenging.)
Following this game was "New Choice," in which the players had to start a scene. If the MC did not like the choice they made, then he said “new choice,” and they had to change what they said and did.
Other games the team performed included a dating show with three very odd contestants and rhyme tag, where the two players had to talk in rhyme the entire time or be eliminated.
One skit involved a movie scene with a picky director, who changed the scene from a game show to a Spanish romance to a science fiction movie, and a man that took people hostage with a spork because he lost his Shrek action figure.
A fan favorite was the Pop-Out Storybook. Each time the mediator turned a page, the players had to change into an odd position and create some sort of popping out motion.
“The show was so funny. This was my first show. The pop-out storytelling was my favorite. Everything just flowed really nicely and they were really quick on their feet,” said Jenna Lewis, a freshman studying Biology.
Madeleine Rossell, a sophomore studying art, loves to attend Comic Frenzy.
“I love Comic Frenzy because it’s so interactive. The audience directs how the night goes. You can have a real good time.”
This was Rossel’s first time attending Comic Frenzy, and she expressed her feelings on the show after it ended.
“The show was very entertaining. I loved how different each member of the comic team was—it kept things exciting. You find yourself on the edge of your seat while they have to quickly come up with clever and entertaining things to do and say,” t said.
However, some would have liked to have had more interaction with the team.
“I wish they had volunteers from the audience come down. It was interactive and quite funny. I want to go again,” Rossell said.
Nicholas Rampton, a junior studying engineering, said, “I loved the environment as I walked into the room. Everyone was laughing, and for the first time, it wasn’t at me. Punch line after punch line, laughter after knee-slapper kept me laughing off my seat.”
Matt Allen, a senior member of Comic Frenzy who's studying theatre and speech education, had many favorite scenes.
“My favorite part is that it’s always different. It’s always new and fresh; I’m never bored. There is so much fun going on; I love that we work as a team. We critique each other and work off one another. We know what is good for a show and what is not,” Allen said.
Students interested in participating in Comic Frenzy will have an opportunity to audition early next semester.
Those who audition will be practicing twice a week and will, at times, have to bring their own material.
